Greetings and pillow talk!

Monday, June 28, 2010

Hello friends! Gosh, it has been a while since I have posted indeed... I have missed the wonderful world of blogging! I had a brilliant two weeks back home in Melbourne spending much time with family and close friends... which explains my lack of blog posts over the last few weeks! I wish I could say I am back in the swing of things here in KL although the nasty flu hit me a few hours before we departed Melbourne so our flight consisted of me shaking and shivering with a high fever as well as many trips to the toilet to relieve both my bladder (thanks BB) and my stomach of the food I could not keep down. I am now on day 5 of having this yukky bug and am coughing and splattering like crazy :(

So, it was a rather quiet weekend indeed with plenty of time spent on the couch... I (yes me) even succumbed to a nap yesterday afternoon, much to the delight of Mr B who would nap several times a day if he could :P I also spent a chunk of last night online scouring through Etsy shops in search of some new cushions for our living area... yes, I am still searching... I keep changing my mind when it comes to colours and patterns etc! Here's what I have come up with so far...

Keeping in mind whatever I choose will be displayed on our 2 seater and 3 seater white, leather chesterfield lounges, I would love to hear your thoughts!

I thought I would also include individual, larger images of each cushion along with the link to the Etsy store it belongs to :)

Idari: Amy Butler Water Bouquet pillow cover.

Persnickety Home: Amy Butler Garden Maze pillow cover.

The Homecentric: Vintage ruffles pillow cover.

Regan's Brain: Amy Butler Midnight Water Bouquet pillow.

Be Still: Velvet designer silver flower pillow cover.

Indari: Pleated linen blend pillows.

Milk and cookies: Designer green geometric on white pillow cover.

What do you think? Pretty aren't they! I will probably spend a little more time searching today to see if I can find some more to mix and match... believe it or not it's pure white accent cushions that I think are the hardest to find!

I hope you are having a great start to yet another week... can you believe it's July this Thursday! x

Baking with Mrs Bouw

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Hello my blogging friends! Oh I feel a little guilty that I have been neglecting my blog and haven't posted in over a week... BUT I have a perfectly good excuse... I am enjoying my trip home to Melbourne too much to spend hours in front of a laptop!

I have had a brilliant week spending time with dear family and friends, enjoying the shops I always miss living overseas, purchasing goodies for Baby Bouw, sucking up the very chilly winter weather (a welcomed change from the heat in KL), driving my car and the joys of Australian supermarkets... it's the little things I always miss! AND I still have one week left :)

So, for now I thought I would share with you the recipe for a cake I baked last week whilst I was still in KL. Although I first saw a recipe for a Hummingbird Cake many years ago, this was my first time baking it. I must say, this cake was exceptionally easy to make and the result was absolutely heavenly! As always, I kept a few slices for Mr B and I and sent the rest off to work with him, and as always, he returned home with feedback on my baked goods... and, well, this moist, sweet, moreish cake won the hearts of everyone that was quick enough to grab a slice. Not to mention it has now officially moved to the top of Mr B's list of favourite cakes!!!

Straining the pineapple and
reserving some of the syrup.

Combine the sifted flours, bicarbonate
of soda, spices and sugar.

In a separate bowl, combine mashed banana, egg,
coconut, oil & reserved syrup.

Your cake mixture once all ingredients are combined...

Pour into cake pan and pop into the oven!

A little slice of heaven!

Hummingbird Cake with Cream cheese Frosting
450g can crushed pineapple in syrup
1 cup plain flour
1/2 cup self-raising flour
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of sods
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 desiccated coconut
1 cup mashed banana
2 eggs, lightly beaten
3/4 cup vegetable oil

Cream Cheese Frosting
250g cream cheese, softened
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 1/2 cups pure icing sugar, sifted

- Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C if you oven is fan-forced)
- Grease and line a 23cm round cake pan with baking paper.
- Drain pineapple over medium bowl, pressing with spoon to extract as much syrup as possible. Ensure you reserve 1/4 cup of the syrup and set aside.
- Sift flours, soda, spices and sugar into a large bowl.
- Stir in pineapple, reserved syrup, coconut, banana, egg and oil; pour into pan.
- Bake, uncovered for about 45-50minutes or until skewer comes out clean when tested.
- Stand cake for 5 minutes before turning cake (top side up) onto a cooling rack and cover with a clean tea towel.

Cream cheese frosting
- Beat the icing sugar and butter in an electric mixer on medium to slow speed until mixture comes together.
- Add the cream cheese in one go and bet until it is completely combined.
- Turn the mixer up to a medium-high speed and beat until the frosting is light and fluffy and a good piping consistency.
- Spread or pipe frosting onto cooled cake.
- Enjoy!

SOOOO delicious!

Another 'must have' recipe to add to your collection and one that I know will become a regular in our household! :)
That's all from me for another few days. My darling hubby arrives in the early hours on Friday morning and we have a road trip and a family weekend away to look forward to! Wishing you a gorgeous weekend! What perfect winter weather it is in Oz to cosy up inside, do some baking and enjoy your treats with a hot cup of tea, coffee or chocolate... enjoy!!! x

Homeward bound!

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

I am very excited to be flying home to Melbourne THIS afternoon and cannot wait to see family, friends and my little pooch :) Everyone keeps telling me how cold it is there at the moment BUT that will be a very welcomed change from the heat and humidity here in KL! I cannot tell you how excited I am about wearing a coat and a scarf and loads of layers to keep me nice and snug yet still having the icy, fresh winter air to breathe :)

Given I have a very full agenda for my trip home, I might only be popping in every few days for the next week or so... but I will do my best to share anything blog worthy :)

Oh but I did bake a delicious cake yesterday afternoon (possibly a new favourite in Mr B's books) so hopefully I have time to post the recipe tomorrow... because it is too good and too easy not to share!

That's all for now my friends... happy hump day! x

Letters to BB: Entry #2

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Hello my darling little one!

I am still buzzing from our appointment this morning! I cannot tell you how unbelievably exciting it was to see you again... and oh how you have grown... you are well and truly a little person now! You are so much bigger that we were even able to count five little fingers on each hand and watched you raise your arm above your head to wave to your Mummy and Daddy... you are already just too adorable for words. Last time you were asleep when we began the ultrasound but this time you were raring to go as soon as we could see you on the screen! Although the excitement proved too much for you and by the end you were fast asleep... again, too adorable for words! Of course I cannot wait for you to make your grand entrance into this world, but, for the time being, I am loving having you all to myself. You looked so beautiful, safe, cosy and content curled up inside my belly and I feel so blessed knowing that I am keeping you that way.

I am now 16 1/2 weeks along and my belly has well and truly POPPED (well I think so anyway)and they weren't kidding when they said it happens almost over night! I think my first experience shopping for maternity clothes is just around the corner... I am not yet sure how I feel about this :P Although I was very pleased that the Doc was impressed that my tummy muscles are still hard even when resting... but not for much longer I am guessing...

Baby Bouw- 16.5 weeks!

Our's seems like a 'textbook pregnancy' so far and I giggle every time I reach a new chapter for a new week and read almost word for word the things I have been experiencing... your usually super organised, mindful and co-ordinated Mummy has been forgetting things and breaking things and well, doing so may things out of character! I think Daddy is getting a slight kick out of seeing your 'sometimes a control freak' Mum lose control.

I (or should I say we!) am heading home to Melbourne tomorrow and am SO very excited to see all our family and friends and to show off my little BB bump... this is one reason I am thrilled I popped when I did and am finally showing!

There is just so much to look forward to my little one... and I love you more as each day passes.

Mummy xo

P.S I have just put together your first home video but am having trouble uploading... I hope to share very soon! x

Oh baby... Cot advice please!

Thursday, June 3, 2010

Yesterday I had a small win (or so I thought) when I stumbled across not one but two cots that I love both in the same store. This is a BIG deal here in KL as modern, stylish and good quality furniture (especially for babies) is not all that easy to find. So I was super excited about my discovery and planned to take hubby there tonight to get his opinion (aren't I kind tee hee).

BUT... yes, it's a big but... I started doing some reading on what to look for in the perfect cot and had no idea there was so much to consider! Make sure the mattress is firm, ensure that the gaps between the bars are not too big, cots with all four sides open are a better option, is the drop rail essential, does it matter if it doesn't convert into a toddler bed etc. etc. etc. Sheesh!

Like most first-time-parents I'm sure we are going to get completely and absolutely carried away ensuring we give our bubba the best we possibly can. But I am also learning quickly that everyone has an opinion and the best you can do is take the information on board and then make a decision based on what you think is right for you and your little one. So my friends, after trolling through baby website after baby website, I thought who better to ask than my friends in blog land! I would LOVE some advice and opinions on baby cots to assist us in choosing the right one for BB!

Thank-you! Son, Mr Bouw & BB xo

My birthday weekend on Pangkor Island!

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

What a divine weekend indeed! As you know Mr B booked this weekend away for my birthday a few months back and I cannot tell you how much we enjoyed ourselves! Our seaside villa was so peaceful and away from the rest of the resort, the beach was without crowds of people, the water so nice and warm, the pool refreshing and the poolside burger was to die for :P

Most of our time was spent lazing by the pool, swimming in the ocean, a few water sports, a friendly game or two of beach volley ball and of course, eating and drinking. And I had THE LOVELIEST birthday on Sunday (my last before I become a Mummy!) thanks to my darling hubby! Despite not being able to enjoy a glass of wine or bubbly, having to take it easy with some of the activities and coming to the realisation that my bikini no longer fits properly due to my continually growing lovely lady lumps, I wouldn't change it for the world... everything was just perfect.

AND thank-you so much to those of you who sent gorgeous birthday wishes :)

So, as promised here are a few (maybe a few too many) pics from our blissful long weekend on Pangkor Island!

Arriving on the island.

A lovely welcome.

Mr B outside our seaside villa.

Me testing the water.

Cute right?! NOT. This cheeky little monkey
would not let me back into our villa... and
despite monkeys being my favourite animal,
when this monkey was joined by two others,
I was a damsal in distress and had to go and
get Mr B to help me get inside!

And apparently if you don't lock your doors,
they will enter your room looking for a feed!

Taking out the wave runner... SO much fun!

Sunset on our first night.

This was delivered to our room at 8:00am...
me having my cake and eating it too :P

Hubby's handywork :)

Here he is... Mr B x

Me with my new SLR camera... thanks darling! x

I think hubby is more obsessed with it than I am!

Goofing around...

Relaxing with a game of cards...

And I won by one point :P

When my darling asked me what I wanted to
do for my birthday dinner, I insisted
on fish and chips by the beach... YUMMY!!!

And to finish off the perfect birthday and weekend,
this was the sunset on our last night... beautiful.

There you have it, a couple of happy snaps from our gorgeous weekend away! It sure has made hubby and I hungry to see more of these beautiful little hideaways whilst we are living in Malaysia... we'd be crazy not too right?! But for my next trip I am headed back home to Melbourne... and next week would you believe... I can't wait! Happy hump day everyone! x

A beautiful surprise.

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Ding dong! Now who could that be at 11:00am on a Tuesday morning? I must admit I was a little annoyed that the security in our condo had let someone up to our floor without letting me know, especially as I am feeling a little under the weather and was still in my PJ's (don't you hate that)! I reluctantly opened the front and my annoyance soon disappeared when a delivery man asked me to sign for this beautiful bunch of fresh blooms!

I opened the card and there was a beautiful message from my best friend (and her hubby) again wishing me a Happy Birthday. She had wanted to send them on my actual birthday but given we were away for a long weekend she held off until today. AND might I add, this darling friend of mine organised this all the way from Melbourne. How special do I feel and how special is she! Thank-you my dear Amy, love you!

And speaking of our long weekend, I'll be back tomorrow to share some pics of our blissful four days on Pangkor Island! Have a great day! x
